Marmaray railway tunnel
RAIL ELECTRIFICATION PROJECT
The Marmaray project in Turkey represents the first physical rail link between Europe and Asia.
It will link the Asian and European shores of Istanbul via a 76.3 km metro-type rail tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait.
The project includes the modernization of 63 km of commuter rail lines, to improve the Gebze-Haydarpasa and Sirkeci- Halkali rail lines, as well as the 13.6 km two-track underwater rail tunnel under the Bosphorus.
The Marmaray project involved the construction of a tunnel under the Istanbul Strait.
This tunnel is considered to be the deepest submerged structure in the world, at 55 m below sea level.
Its length is 13.6 km (8.5 miles), with 9.8 km of bored tunnel, 2.4 km built using cut-and-cover methods and the remaining 1.4 km as a tubular tunnel.
The submerged tunnel is connected to the coast by tunnels dug to produce separate holes for each racing line, with frequent interval connections for emergency use.
The system also included the modernization of 63 km of existing commuter rail lines, and the reconstruction and construction of 37 new three-station stations.
The stations are based on metro-type operations, but are also served by heavy trains capable of running at 100 km / h with an average speed between stations of 45 km / h.
The Marmaray project provides an east-west transport corridor with a connection to Yenkapi on the north-south metro line, also under construction.
